CAMERON - A woman was killed early Wednesday when she was struck by an oncoming freight train.

The accident occurred about 6:10 a.m.

Emergency personnel were called to 165th Street and one half mile north of 190th Avenue.

A westbound Burlington Northern freight train struck an unidentified female east of Cameron.

Emergency teams included the Warren County Sheriff's Department, Monmouth Police Department, Illinois State Police, GHAS, and Warren County Coroner William Underwood.

The Illinois Crime Scene Technical team was called to the scene.

The identity of the victim has not been released. The accident remains under investigation.

The fatal accident was the second in the area in the past six months. In March Johnathon Aaron Bennington, 20, of Peoria, in advertinley stepped in the path of an oncoming Amtrak train.

The pedestrian/train accident occurred at the railroad crossing located at 600 South Main Street. The accident stunned people in the immediate vicinity who witnessed the mishap.

One woman witnessed the tragic accident and ran to the nearby police station to report a pedestrian was just struck by a train.

The woman said it appeared the pedestrian did not realize the eastbound train was coming. A freight train went by just before the passenger train arrived.

Investigators believe Bennington thought the path was clear when he stepped in front of the train.
