Woman fatally struck by train in Berwyn

A freight train fatally struck a woman Sunday evening in west suburban Berwyn.

A train struck a woman in “the late-afternoon” near Oak Park and Stanley avenues, according to the Berwyn Fire Department. Nobody else was injured or hospitalized.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office has been notified of the death, but the woman’s name and pronouncement information were not immediately available.

Metra/Burlington Northern Santa Fe train No. 1315 was scheduled to arrive in Aurora at 5:46 p.m., but was stopped in Berwyn about 5:20 p.m. because of a freight train accident, according to Metra’s Web site.

At 5:30 p.m., the train was moving, but was running about 60 minutes behind schedule, the site said. Additionally, Metra/BNSF train No. 1318, scheduled to arrive at Chicago’s Union Station at 5:42 p.m., is about 20 minutes behind schedule because of the accident.

Berwyn police are investigating, but had no comment Sunday evening.
