Two Grundy County residents died early Sunday after their vehicle collided with a train east of Mazon.
Terrence R. Dooley Jr., 43, and Darci A. Kurbis, 27, were pronounced dead at the scene at 9:10 a.m. by the Grundy County Coroner's Office.
The crash occurred about an hour earlier on Tynan Road, just north of Grand Ridge Road in Grundy County.
Dooley was southbound on Tynan Road when the vehicle approached the tracks, according to the coroner's office. The engineer of the westbound train told authorities it appeared the vehicle was going to stop, but continued onto the tracks. The train was traveling about 60 mph. There were no obstructions in the area and the crossing has no lights or gates.
The vehicle was struck on the driver's side and the impact propelled the vehicle more than 800 feet west of the crossing, where it landed in a ditch on the south side of the tracks. The ditch had about three feet of water in it and the vehicle was on its top in the water.
Coal City emergency personnel, Mazon police and Illinois State Police also assisted at the scene.
Grundy County Coroner John Callahan said Dooley was going to pick up his daughter at her mother's residence a mile further on Tynan Road.
The accident is under investigation and autopsies are scheduled for today.
