Man dies in train-car accident

A Catlin man was killed Monday after the car he was in collided with a train.

Lyndal W. Arnold, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene of the train-car collision at 4:16 p.m. Monday by Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson.

Capt. Dennis Wood of the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department said the accident was reported just before 4 p.m. along County Road 250 East, three-quarters of a mile south of Catlin-Homer Road.

Arnold was heading northbound when the westbound Norfolk Southern train struck his 2000 Buick Regal.

There were no lights or crossing gates at the intersection where the collision occurred.

Investigators with the sheriff’s department remained on the scene Monday night, conducting investigations with the train engineer and another witness to the accident.

The exact nature of the accident — specifically whether the Buick Regal was stopped on the tracks or approaching the inter-section — was not immediately available.

The accident is still under investigation by the coroner’s office and the sheriff’s department.
