Arlington Heights man killed by train

January 30, 2009

A Metra train fatally struck a man in northwest suburban Arlington Heights Thursday night, police said.

Michael Cooper, 57, of 1109 W. Hawthorne St. in Arlington Heights, was struck by a train at 900 W. Euclid Ave. and was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:45 a.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Friday. Cooper was struck by a Metra Train about 8:40 p.m., Arlington Heights police Cmder. Michael Miljan said.

Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest train No. 657 was scheduled to arrive at Chicago’s Ogilvie Transportation Center at 8:55 p.m., but was stopped because of the “pedestrian incident,” according to Metra’s Web site. Police temporarily closed the intersection of U.S. Route 14 and Euclid Avenue while police investigated, Miljan said.

A Metra spokesperson was not immediately available.

Arlington Heights and Metra police are investigating.
